Meadowcreek was the site of a Seed-Saving Workshop on Saturday, September 8th which was sponsored by the Meadowcreek LINKPROJECT.
Herb Culver from Bean Mountain Farms facilitated the workshop. Bean Mountain Farms is a greenhouse nursery producing open pollinated and heirloom plants. Some of the varieties offered at the nursery are unique and are not commercially available elsewhere. Herb has been saving seeds since visiting the Seed Savers Exchange demonstration garden in 1986. The seed-saving workshop was a hands-on demonstration of how to save seeds of vegetables, herbs, and flowers and was intended for home gardeners. No experience was necessary. Not only were participants treated to Culver’s meticulous seed-saving process, they also received countless gems of wisdom about gardening that they report they’ll implement immediately.
Culver shared his concerned about the quality of seed-saving and the “growing out” of heirloom crops in the country. He feels the good amount of care needed to accompany both facets of preserving heirloom crops is not being applied and is resulting in a loss of crop integrity. Participants left feeling informed and empowered to participate in the preservation of heirloom crops.
Following are pictures of participants benefitting from and enjoying the time they spent with Herb Culver.
